Lewis Hamilton was taken aback by booing from the home fans as he finished second in the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen cruised home to bag his 14th win of the year, an F1 record, while local favourite Sergio Perez came home third.
Hamilton, who had also qualified one place ahead of Perez’s Red Bull before both overtook George Russell on the first lap, admitted his uncertainty at the crowd’s reaction as jeers were audible at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez podium ceremony.
“This has been an amazing crowd, definitely a bit awkward this time around with boos all day,” he said.
“But, nevertheless I have so much love for Mexico and for the people here.
“What a great race and an event they've put on this weekend.
“I was so close in that first stint but I think the Red Bull was clearly too fast today and ultimately, maybe they had the better tyre strategy.”
F1 has witnessed a rise in fans booing their local favourite’s rivals in recent years, with similar incidents at Silverstone and Zandvoort quickly condemned by all drivers concerned.
