Exact time Edinburgh thunderstorms are set to hit the capital this week

A thunderstorm is set to hit Edinburgh from lunchtime today, as heavy showers and flashes of lightning will continue from Tuesday onwards.

Forecasters at the BBC have predicted that the thundery showers and lightning will begin from 1pm on Tuesday, September 6, and last until Thursday, September 8 at 8pm. The wind will pick up from this evening, and reach a maximum breeze at 2pm on Thursday.

The humidity levels will stay at above 80 per cent, meaning that despite the rain and thundery weather, the capital will still feel warm and clammy for most. The sun will still be piercing through the clouds throughout the week, with temperature highs of 20 degrees across the city.

The storm will ease off tonight by 10pm, and restart on Wednesday at 6pm. It will then last throughout the night until Thursday, where the final thunderclaps and flashes of lightning will end by 8pm on September 8.

Here is the forecast for the upcoming week, as predicted by BBC Weather.

Today's forecast in Edinburgh

Today will be cloudy and wet in eastern Scotland and unsettled elsewhere, with heavy showers developing in the afternoon. Some of the showers will be thundery. The Northern Isles will escape drier.

Tonight's forecast in Edinburgh

Tonight will be cloudy and wet for most, with outbreaks of heavy rain. However, the far northwest will escape drier. Clear spells will develop in Shetland. Windy for the Isles, especially in Orkney.

Tomorrow's forecast in Edinburgh

Tomorrow, rain slowly clearing out from the mainland in the morning, but then moving into the Northern Isles later. In addition, further showers will develop from the south, some heavy and thundery.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday in Edinburgh

During Thursday and Friday, eastern Scotland is likely to see plenty of cloud, breezy conditions and prolonged heavy rain outbreaks. There will be a mixture of sunny spells and cloudy periods elsewhere, with scattered showers, but the far north and northwest are likely to escape drier.

Saturday looks to continue similarly, but drier overall. Sunshine developing over Shetland.
