Ex-NFL player Stanley Wilson Jr dies aged 40 after collapsing at mental hospital

Former NFL player Stanley Wilson Jr has tragically died at the age of 40 after collapsing at a mental hospital.

Wilson Jr was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2005 and played for them for two years. His career was sadly cut short by an Achilles tendon injury during pre-season in 2008, forcing him into an early retirement.

Following the end of his playing career, Wilson ran into personal troubles and was arrested on numerous occasions - and had been in police custody since being arrested in August. He had been in Metropolitan State Hospital in Los Angeles since February 1.

According to TMZ, Wilson Jr collapsed and died during intake at the medical facility. The former cornerback apparently died earlier this month, and autopsy results are pending.

Wilson Jr played 32 games in his NFL career, with none of those being starts for the Lions. In those games, he forced eight pass break-ups, one fumble and 78 tackles.

In 2016 he was shot by an elderly resident after allegedly attempting to break into a home while naked. He was then arrested twice in 2017 and sentenced to ten days in jail.

His most recent arrest came in August after he was alleged to have broken into a $30million house in Hollywood, before moving various items and taking a bath outside in an outdoor fountain.

Wilson Jr was apparently deemed incompetent to stand trial after being arrested in August, and had been in the mental hospital as a result.
