Former Metropolitan Police officer David Carrick has appeared in court to face allegation of rape and the alleged sexual abuse of a girl more than 30 years ago.
The 49-year-old faces two sets of allegations involving the alleged sexual abuse of two complainants.
In one set, he is charged with rape in 2019 and between late 2014 and April 2015, when he was a serving officer, and he also faces counts of sexual assault in 2019 and engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour between 2016 and 2019.
In the second set of allegations, Carrick faces five charges of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 14 in 1989 and 1990, when Carrick himself was 14 and 15-years-old.
The alleged sex crimes are said to have taken place in Salisbury and Stevenage.
The former police officer, who was a member of the Met’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection unit, appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Thursday through a videolink from HMP Full Sutton.
Carrick, dressed in grey and sporting a full greying beard, sat with his arms folded through the ten-minute hearing.
Prosecutor Claire Harden-Frost told the court: “Mr Carrick is charged with two sets of offences arising out of allegations made by two separate complainants.”
No further details of the allegations were aired in open court.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring remanded Carrick in custody until the next hearing at the Old Bailey on November 14.
“You face nine allegations, two of which are indictable only”, said the judge. “The court must sent them to the crown court, and the either-way offences will be sent alongside those cases because they are related.
“All charges are sent to the Central Criminal Court where you will appear for a hearing on November 14.
Carrick was not asked to enter any pleas.
Carrick is accused of five counts of indecent assault against one woman, and two counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of coercive and controlling behaviour against another.
Announcing the charges earlier this month, Lisa Ramsarran, chief crown prosecutor for the CPS in Thames and Chiltern, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Hertfordshire Constabulary to charge David Carrick with sexual offences against two women.
“David Carrick has been charged with five counts of indecent assault, two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
“He has also been charged with one count of coercive and controlling behaviour.
“As criminal proceedings against this defendant are active, there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice his right to a fair trial.”
Detective Chief Inspector Iain Moor, of Hertfordshire Constabulary’s major crime unit, added: “The charges come in the wake of an extensive and complex investigation conducted over a period of several months.”
