Ex-Manchester United striker's Erik Ten Hag doubts are as misguided as club's transfer policy

Manchester United are in the process of appointing a new manager ahead of the summer. There are a number of potential candidates, with the front runners being Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag.

Until then, Ralf Rangnick must plough on in the United dugout. Despite improving many parts of the team, including its defensive structure and ability to create chances, the squad is still dysfunctional and the results have not followed.

This has led to many rumours that there is unrest in the dressing room around Rangnick. Some reports say members of the squad questioned his CV and others needed to Google who the German manager even was, but a number of players such as Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford have come out to deny the murmurings.

However former United striker Louis Saha has stated that if his club was to appoint Ten Hag, there may be a similar amount of unrest. He told the Metro: "He has quality for sure, the Dutch people are very knowledgeable about football.

"But I’m sorry, it is a different animal. Ajax is a trampoline for big clubs. They are respected in world football but they are not in that league. This is not Milan or Real Madrid.

"I am sure that most of the players would not know him. Managing this club is a different thing. We have seen some big names come in and they didn’t make it.

"Jose Mourinho is one of the biggest in world football, he brought results in terms of winning trophies but we claim it was an unsuccessful spell."

Saha then goes on to state that his preferred choice would be Zinedine Zidane, who has been without a job since he resigned from Real Madrid after a second spell that was nowhere near as successful as his first, believing he would be a manager that the club could get behind.

But why?

United in recent years have done this often. They have targeted the big names hoping that the prestige they bring will do most of the leg work in terms of proving the quality. In the end, it never seems to work out - as Alexis Sanchez and now to some degree Cristiano Ronaldo are proving.

Zidane did some great things with Madrid that can't be discredited, but Ten Hag is proving himself right now at Ajax, in the Champions League. This is what any potential United manager should be doing.

We need the best right now based on quantifiable factors and that's what Saha seems to have missed in his analysis. Yes, the players might idolise or respect a bigger name, but that doesn't win you football games.

Ten Hag would be chosen because he has built two title-winning teams from scratch and had them be competitive in the Champions League.

As Saha says, Ajax are not "Milan or Real Madrid". Ten Hag has overachievement, so why not try to bring that to Old Trafford?
