Ex-Man United striker agrees with Ralf Rangnick's damning verdict after Old Trafford visit

Old Trafford hero Dwight Yorke has challenged Erik ten Hag to perform 'major surgery' on Manchester United after a dismal campaign came to a close on Sunday.

Former interim boss Ralf Rangnick had previously suggested the club needed “open-heart surgery” ahead of a much-needed overhaul in the summer. The German was praised by many fans for his honesty at the time, with the club severely lacking on the pitch.

These woes continued for the rest of the season as United secured sixth place on Sunday by virtue of West Ham’s loss to Brighton after Rangnick saw his team lose 1-0 at Crystal Palace in his final game. The team looks a long way off from the Treble-winning side that Yorke played in during the 1998/99 season.

The former striker said he had witnessed the campaign’s capitulation close up after spending the last two weeks at the club. And from what he saw, he agreed with Rangnick’s damning April assessment.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Yorke said: “We (United) are nowhere near where we are supposed to be. Especially with the players that we have in the squad at the moment.

“I spent the last two weeks there and had some more insight into looking where the club is and why we are in that position. He (Ten Hag) has got some major surgery to repair there, there's work that needs to be done.”
