Ex-Celtic youngster Herron suspended by Larne over 'pro-IRA t-shirt'

Ex-Celtic youngster Herron suspended by Larne over 'pro-IRA t-shirt'

EX-CELTIC youngster John Herron has been suspended by current club Larne over an image of him allegedly wearing a pro-IRA t-shirt.

The 28-year-old - who came through the Celtic youth ranks - has been suspended with immediate effect by the Northern Irish club.

It comes after images shared on social media appeared to show the midfielder wearing a pro-IRA t-shirt.

The club have confirmed Herron will not feature in any fixtures during the period of his suspension while an investigation is ongoing.

MP for North Down Stephen Farry branded the t-shirt as "sickening" as he demanded action from the club and the Irish Football Association.

He wrote on Twitter: "The picture of Larne FC player, John Herron, wearing a pro IRA tee-shirt on social media is sickening.

"There must be zero tolerance of the celebration of terrorism, whether that is Republican or Loyalist.

"The club and IFA need to investigate and take appropriate action."

A Larne club statement read: "Following the circulation of an image online yesterday evening (Sunday), Larne Football Club can confirm John Herron has been suspended with immediate effect.

"For the period of his suspension, John will not represent the club in fixtures at any level. An investigation into this incident is now underway.

"We have shown that we are an inclusive football club for all, demonstrated not only in words but also by our extensive work in the local community.

"There is no room for behaviour which falls outside of this ethos and we fully expect members, players and anyone associated with the club to reflect these standards at all times.

"We will be making no further comment until the investigation has been completed."

Herron made two first-team appearances for Celtic and also played for Cowdenbeath, Dunfermline and Raith Rovers in Scotland.

He also played for Blackpool and Glentoran before moving to Larne in 2020.
