THERE'S no shame in asking for help and it's something Newcastle mum Iris Chen wants her daughter to know as she grows up.
The single-mother moved from China eight years ago, later studying at the University of Newcastle.
When times were tough she turned to The Salvation Army for help and, with Christmas around the corner, she wants others to know they can do the same.
"The Salvos gave me hope and dignity at Christmas time, not only giving me toys for my daughter, but also a gift voucher so I could buy some presents for my family and friends," she said.
"In that moment I was struggling and it helped me so much."
The Salvation Army launched its 36th annual Christmas Toy Drive Appeal on Monday, November 18.
Teaming up with Newcastle Permanent and Greater Bank as collection points for the Toy Drive, the Salvos are calling on the community to donate to those in need this Christmas.
Belmont-based Salvation Army Auxiliary Lieutenant Bernie Muendel said that more than 5500 donations were made last year and he was hoping to see that number increase.
"We are already seeing that there is a need for our support this Christmas as families are doing it tough, and you never know when you might need a helping hand from the Salvos," he said.
"Everyone's feeling the pinch."
Suggested gift options include toys, books and games for younger children and gift vouchers, sports equipment and beauty products for teenagers.
"A gift voucher is such an empowering gift for teens to receive because it gives them the freedom to choose something special for themselves," Mr Muendel said.
"Your donation may be the only gift a child receives on Christmas morning, so we hope to bring a smile to their face as they unwrap their present."
NGM Group Head of Community and Sustainability Kirrah McClelland said that, along with collecting for the Toy Drive, volunteers sorted gifts at the Salvos warehouse.
"Christmas is about giving and being kind to one another, so we are honoured to support the Salvos each year to help ensure every child can experience the joy of opening a present on Christmas morning," she said.
Donations can be made at any Newcastle Permanent or Greater Bank branch until Friday, December 13. Gifts should be new and unwrapped and are accepted for all ages, including teenagers.
