'Everyone hates my baby's name - they say it reminds them of our family dog'

When it comes to naming a child, parents can spend hours reading through baby books in search of the perfect moniker. But sometimes, your favourite option doesn't go down well with your family or friends.

That's exactly what happened to one couple who agreed to name their baby boy Sebastian - saying they love how it sounds. Taking to Reddit, the mum-to-be said: "My husband and I somehow landed on a name we both like. I mentioned Sebastian and he loved it.

"I had other options I really like too - Nicholas, Christopher - but he heard Sebastian and kind of stuck to it." But after announcing the name to their family and friends, their happiness turned into sadness.

"Everyone else seems to hate the name, including his and my best friends," she added.

She came to learn how her friends and family associate the name Sebastian with a dog, as their own dog has "basically the same name".

The woman added: "Before my husband and I got together, he adopted a dog and named him Bastian, who lives with his parents.

"People either just don't like it or don't like that the dog has basically the same name. I'm heartbroken and don't know how to feel."

Trying to ease her heartache, one user said: "Sebastian is a fine name, personally, I wouldn't care and go ahead.

"The name will grow on them as they see the child. Even if they still dislike it, I think it's none of their business to grumble because it's not an inconceivably odd name."

"But this is one of the reasons I also don't name my pets human names. But Bastian is a nickname at best."

Another user added: "I'm not going to lie, almost sharing a name with the dog is kind of weird but it’s your kid and your choice. Not those other people’s. They’ll get over it."

A third user said: "Stop sharing baby name ideas with friends and family. Announce the name when baby comes.

"Sebastian is fine - it's a real name, it's not weirdly spelled or unnecessarily unique, it's common enough I know four Sebs. If you two love it then go with it.

"It is very close to the dog's name and you are going to get comments on that for a long time to come."
