Every word Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper said on dramatic draw, red card and Alex Mighten

Ryan Yates came off the bench to rescue a point for 10-man Nottingham Forest against Stoke City at the City Ground.

The Reds took the lead through Brennan Johnson, only to be pegged back by Josh Maja's goal from a corner.

And they were then dealt another blow when goalkeeper Brice Samba was issued a straight red card in the 85th minute for swiping Phil Jagielka around the back of the head inside the area.

Joe Worrall stepped in goal but was unable to stop Lewis Baker's subsequent penalty, leaving the Potters looking on course to claim the three points.

That was until Yates headed home in stoppage time after James Garner had gone close with a free-kick.

Here's what Forest head coach Steve Cooper had to say at the final whistle of the 2-2 draw.

What did you think of the Brice Samba incident?

“He knows he’s made a huge error. For all of the mistakes the referee made today, I have no complaints with the red card.

“He’s made a mistake, and it’s nearly cost us.

“I thought it was a bit of an average game overall, truth be told. It took both teams a little bit to get going. Maybe it did look like the third of a three-game week.

“But we settled into our mid-block. That wasn’t really the plan, if I’m being honest - we always want to attack games, particularly at home.

“Maybe we didn’t quite have the energy at the start to do that, so we settled into trying to hit Stoke on the count-attack.

“We still got into some really good positions in the first half. Brennan could or should have scored by doing what he does.

“At half-time, we wanted more from the players but also accepted there were certain things we needed to do defensively.

“We scored how we wanted to. It was a brilliant ball from Sam (Surridge), Max Lowe’s cross was excellent and then Brennan finished.

“It was about managing the game out then, and trying to score another, because I really thought the game was there for the taking. I thought Stoke were vulnerable from turnovers.

“We didn’t manage to do that and conceded from a set-piece. Then Brice has his moment, and we had to accept then the best we could really hope for was for a draw.

“We had to take it in the end.”

Brice had played well apart from that, hadn't he?

"Yeah, let's not lose sight of that.

"I thought some of his decision-making was good, in terms of his distribution and positional play. He's just had a silly moment that could have been more costly than what it ended up being."

Was it pleasing to see Ryan to come on and score?

"It was a nice moment for him.

“We changed shape to try to win the game. We wanted to get Alex on the pitch. We felt the second goal was there for us to really put the game to bed.

"There was no way we deserved to lose the game, and Stoke definitely didn't deserve to win it.

“But at the same time, we've got to have better moments, in terms of going 1-0 up and seeing it out - not conceding off set-pieces, and keeping our concentration."

Does the late equaliser say a lot about the character in your team?

“We never gave up, did we? We kept going.

“I never want to say that a draw at home is good, because we have to aim for more. But after what happened with Brice, we would always take that.

“Everyone makes mistakes and Brice is old enough to know that he has made a mistake. Now is not the time to reflect too much on it. We need to take stock and have a conversation with him. We do not think anything less of him.”

How do you think Joe Worrall did in goal?

“It was clear Joe was going to be the one to go in goal. To be fair to the lads, they managed that themselves.

“He did okay with his positioning. He certainly wasn’t going to lack any bravery.

“The last thing I wanted to see was an outfield player going in goal, but if it was going to be anyone, it was going to be him.”

Was it good to see Alex Mighten back?

"It was good. He had a little impact, having a bit of contribution into where Jimmy won the free-kick for the goal.

"We really believe in Alex.

"He had a difficult tackle when he got hit here (for his knee injury), but he's back now.

"He's not ready to start games. We have to give him some more training. But it's good he's back in the mix.”
