Everton player ratings as Demarai Gray dangerous but one man poor vs Manchester United

Jordan Pickford 7

England’s number one had to be at his to deny Anthony Martial with his legs in the first half and then tipping a Bruno Fernandes effort over the bar after the break.

Seamus Coleman 7

United’s first goal came down his flank as Ben Godfrey was left to deal with Rashford but the returning captain epitomised his side’s fighting spirit and despite his advancing years, was full of running.

Vitalii Mykolenko 5

Caught out of position for United’s first goal as Antony was left in too much space at the back post, he grew into the contest but scuffed a big chance to equalise when picked out by Coleman.

AS IT HAPPENED: Manchester United vs Everton - score updates and analysis

Ben Godfrey 6

Booked for a foul on Marcus Rashford, he was also left chasing him in the build up to the first goal but made a great recovery tackle to deny him late on and Everton’s looked a tighter unit with his inclusion as a third centre-back despite him conceding a stoppage time penalty for bringing down Alejandro Garnacho.

Conor Coady 7

An eventful but ultimately disappointing night as the on-loan centre-back put the ball into the net at the Stretford End twice, equalising from point blank range to capitalise on David De Gea’s blooper before an error of his own saw him turn Marcus Rashford’s cross into his own goal.

James Tarkowski 7

Put his body on the line as you’d expect with a series of blocks and interceptions after not knowing whether to stick or twist when trying to cut out the cross for United’s first goal.

Idrissa Gueye 6

Shrugged off his Brighton & Hove Albion horror show with an improved display but despite working hard, he still doesn’t look to be at the same level as first time around.

Amadou Onana 7

One of his most-impressive displays to date and against quality opposition, he used his physicality well and outmuscled Casemiro in the build-up to Everton’s equaliser before picking up a late booking for a foul on Lisandro Martinez.

Alex Iwobi 6

Energetic display but gave the ball away on too many occasions and often when not under much pressure but was unfortunate to be forced off just after the restart after being caught by Tyrell Malacia when bursting upfield.

Demarai Gray 7

Cruelly denied what would have been the assist for a second equaliser after a VAR check ruled him to be offside in the build-up, he often looked dangerous when running at United’s defence.

Neal Maupay 6

Still doesn’t look enough of a scoring threat but he battled hard up front and his endeavour in getting a shot in from a tight angle forced De Gea into making the mistake that created Everton’s equaliser.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (on 51 for Iwobi) 6

Brought on after Iwobi’s injury, he was often on the back foot and was booked foul on Rashford.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (on 69 for Maupay) 7

Predatory finish to chest the ball into the United net from point blank range, he fought he’d earned a Goodison Park replay only for the goal to be ruled out.

Anthony Gordon (on 81 for Coleman)

Offered a more attack-minded option at wing-back late on as Everton chased the game.

Dwight McNeil (on 81 for Mykolenko)

Same as Gordon but on the left flank.
