Everton next manager: Five favourites profiled after Frank Lampard sacked

Frank Lampard has been sacked as Everton manager following the club's 2-0 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.

A first-half brace from England international Jarrod Bowen at the London Stadium proved to be the final straw for the Blues' owner Farhad Moshiri and the club's board, who were in attendance in East London.

The bookies currently list Sean Dyche, Duncan Ferguson, Marcelo Bielsa, Wayne Rooney and David Moyes as the favourites to succeed Lampard. Here the ECHO takes a look at each of the bookies' candidates.

Sean Dyche 9/4

After guiding Burnley to the Premier League on two separate occasions during his time at Turf Moor, Sean Dyche has found himself out of work since leaving the Clarets last April.

The former Chesterfield captain had previously been linked with vacancies at Crystal Palace, Celtic and Bournemouth in seasons gone by and had more recently been touted as Lampard's potential successor on Merseyside.

After a decade at the Lancashire outfit, the 51-year-old has since taken time out of the game and has appeared on Sky Sports as a pundit, as well as Ben Foster's Cycling GK podcast, and discussed the importance of waiting for the right offer before returning to football.

Duncan Ferguson 7/2

The Everton legend left the club in the summer after serving as assistant manager to Lampard.

The 51-year-old was and is keen to explore his own managerial possibilities, having twice been named as caretaker boss of the Blues following the sackings of Marco Silva in 2019 and Rafa Benitez in January 2022..

In his first spell, Ferguson went unbeaten in three league, winning one and drawing two, and also suffering a League Cup defeat on penalties at home to Leicester City.

In his second spell, the Scot had just one game in charge, a 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa, before the club turned to Lampard to replace the sacked Benitez.

Marcelo Bielsa 5/1

The 67-year-old is out of work after being sacked by Leeds United in February.

Bielsa was worshipped at Elland Road after leading the Whites back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence and then securing a ninth-placed on their first season back in the top flight.

But it went wrong for the Argentine in his final season of the club and he was replaced by Jesse Marsch.

David Moyes 8/1

David Moyes was in the opposite dugout to Lampard on Saturday afternoon as both managers faced extensive scrutiny about their futures at their respective clubs due to a string of poor results. However, with the Scot getting the better of Lampard it appears his job at the London Stadium is safe for the time being at least.

Despite a difficult campaign with the hammers this time around, the former Manchester United manager has enjoyed a largely successful second stint at West Ham having guided the club to the sixth and seventh-place finishes in the Premier League.

Moyes, who was of course the Blues' boss for nine years before he was head-hunted as Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement at Manchester United in 2013, was the last manager to secure qualification to the Champions League with Everton - after he guided them to a fourth-placed finish in the 2004/05 season - although the Blues failed to qualify for the group stages.

Wayne Rooney 7/1

Former Everton star Wayne Rooney has also been linked with a return to Goodison Park - just months after he left English football to manage Major League Soccer side D.C United.

Rooney was tasked with leading Derby County's Championship survival bid last campaign, although his efforts would fall in vain as the Rams' off-field issues resulted in a 21-point deduction.

But despite suffering relegation to the third tier of English football, the former England captain was lauded for his efforts at Pride Park and was subsequently linked with taking over the reins at Goodison Park during the summer.

While speculation linking Rooney with a return as manager appeared tentative at that time, the Liverpudlian is now one of the favourites to take over the Blues for the rest of the season.
