Everton confirm Anthony Gordon Newcastle sale after 'formal transfer request'

Anthony Gordon has signed for Newcastle United from Everton in a deal that could be worth £45million.

The ECHO understands Everton had valued Gordon at around £60million - but while the Magpies were initially unwilling to go above £40million, a structured deal with incentives was struck after the Kirkdale-born player submitted a formal transfer request.

In a club statement on Sunday afternoon, Everton confirmed: "Anthony Gordon has joined Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee.

"The 21-year-old forward leaves Everton after having submitted a formal transfer request.

"Gordon joined the Club’s Academy at the age of 11 and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in a Europa League tie in December 2017. He went on to make 78 First-Team appearances, scoring seven goals."

Gordon attended Everton training at Finch Farm for the first time this week on Friday having missed the sessions led by Leighton Baines and Paul Tait on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Only the first of those days was described as a 'planned absence' by the club.

The player was pictured arriving for his medical on Tyneside on Saturday morning, with images leaking later in the afternoon of the 21-year-old in a Newcastle shirt completing club media duties ahead of the announcement on Sunday afternoon.

Everton are attempting to land attacking recruits before the transfer window shuts early next week. Sean Dyche is set to be announced as the club's new manager, following the departure of Frank Lampard.

After an initial focus on loans – with Arnaut Danjuma having been poised to sign before Tottenham Hotspur hijacked the deal – Gordon’s sale is set to increase the Blues' spending power while also necessitating the need for a replacement.
