Evening Standard Comment: As Guinness invests in London, will good things come to a Chancellor who waits?

Rishi Sunak did not quite say “Guinness is good for you”. But speaking to the Standard, the Chancellor welcomed what he called a “crucial vote of confidence” in the capital’s continued recovery from lockdown slumber, as Guinness announced plans to open a 50,000 sq ft, £73 million microbrewery, event space and restaurant in Covent Garden.

While the Government gears up to publish its long-delayed and much-vaunted Levelling Up white paper, it is encouraging to hear senior ministers give London’s economy the due care and attention it deserves. We hope this trend can continue, with a long-term financial package for TfL, as well as a renewed focus on urban poverty, housing and infrastructure.

As our exclusive Ipsos Mori poll reveals that Sunak is the frontrunner to succeed Boris Johnson and level with Sir Keir Starmer in the “good prime minister” stakes, the Chancellor must be wondering if good things will indeed come to those who wait.

The tiger roars in

Lady Gaga, Phillip Schofield and Princess Anne share one thing in common — they were all born in the year of the tiger.

Chinese New Year, observed by more than a billion people around the world, is set to be celebrated with food, family and parades. London’s Chinese community makes an enormous contribution to our city’s culture, economy and food scene.

We wish everyone a happy year of the tiger.
