"Even though he's dead, I believe that in a hundred years' time from now people will still be listening to him": Steve Vai on the wild genius of Frank Zappa – and the two words that made him want to join his band

Steve Vai is one of rock’s greatest and most influential guitar players, but even he had to start somewhere. And, as he told Classic Rock, that was as an apprentice to avant garde wizard Frank Zappa, a man whose albums Vai grew up listening to.

When I was growing up in New York, the albums that I really cut my teeth on were things like Led Zeppelin II, Machine Head by Deep Purple and the first few Queen records. I listened to these albums all the time and absorbed everything I possibly could.
