The discussion took place during a special parliamentary session in New Delhi, where the House was deliberating proposals to expand the strength of the Lok Sabha and ensure one-third representation for women.
“Chanakya would be shocked,” says Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
While addressing the House, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the ruling party of using the proposed changes as a political strategy to strengthen its position ahead of future elections. She alleged that while the government publicly speaks about women’s empowerment, it is simultaneously weakening the federal structure and reducing the influence of certain states.
Noticing Amit Shah smiling during her speech, she responded with a pointed but humorous remark, saying the “home minister is laughing, their entire plan is ready,” prompting reactions across the House.
She further added in a sarcastic tone that if the ancient strategist Chanakya were alive today, he would be “shocked” by what she described as political manoeuvring, a comment that led to laughter among members present.
Amit Shah defends proposal, assures states
Responding to concerns raised by the Opposition, Amit Shah reiterated that the proposed expansion of Lok Sabha seats would be carried out proportionately, ensuring that no state is disadvantaged.
He provided specific projections for southern states, stating that Karnataka’s seats could rise from 28 to 42, Andhra Pradesh from 25 to 38, Telangana from 17 to 26, and Tamil Nadu from 39 to 59. According to him, the relative representation of states would remain consistent even after the increase.
Modi backs women’s reservation bill
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the House, urging broad support for the women’s reservation bill. He assured members that the legislation would not result in discrimination or unfair advantage to any group and described it as a step toward strengthening democratic participation.
He also warned critics of the bill, saying that opposition to women’s reservation would not be viewed kindly by women voters.
Separately, actor and MP Kangana Ranaut also contributed to the debate, supporting the government’s position on the legislation.
Political tension alongside brief humour
While the debate largely centred on constitutional and electoral reforms, the exchange between Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Amit Shah briefly shifted the tone of the House, with her Chanakya reference drawing laughter before proceedings returned to policy discussions.
