Euston, we have connection: 4G and 5G roll-out continues on London Underground

Euston has become the latest Tube station to join the growing 4G and 5G network on the London Underground.

Super-fast connections – which enable passengers to make voice calls, send messages and stream video on their mobile phones – were switched on in the station ticket halls and the Charing Cross platforms on the Northern line went live on Tuesday morning.

The platforms on the Bank branch of the Northern line, and the Victoria line platforms at Euston, be connected in the coming months.

It is part of the plan to bring super-fast mobile coverage to the Tube network. Earlier this month, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road – and the Central line tunnels that connect them – became the first West End Tube stations to get 4G and 5G.

In the next few weeks, the tunnels between Camden Town, Mornington Crescent and Euston will be connected.

This will create consistent mobile coverage in both the stations and tunnels on the Northern line between Archway and Euston - a distance of about three miles.

The network will be extended to the Elizabeth line by Christmas, when Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Liverpool Street are connected.

The 4G and 5G network is also being extended throughout miles of Tube tunnels – meaning passengers can make calls while deep underground.

By the end of the year, 33 Tube stations will have 4G coverage, increasing above 40 by next Spring.

The work is being done by Boldyn Networks at no cost to TfL. All four mobile network operators - Three UK, EE, Vodafone, and Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) - are taking part.

Shashi Verma, chief technology officer at TfL, said: “We’re pleased that customers using the Charing Cross branch at Euston station can now get 4G and 5G on their phones within the station, as part of the next stage of our project with Boldyn Networks to bring high-speed mobile coverage to the whole Tube network.

“With stations between Euston and Tottenham Court Road following within the next month, this increased connectivity will allow customers to get the latest travel information, access social media, check their emails, make calls, and stream videos while passing through these stations.”
