Eurovision's Graham Norton's brutally honest opinion on 'dud' finalists and UK hopes

Graham Norton has given his brutally honest opinion on this year's Eurovision Song Contest finalists.

The much-loved presenter is hosting the Grand Final of the competition, which will be broadcasted from Liverpool on behalf of last year's winners Ukraine. Graham has been providing commentary for the UK fans in the two semi-finals but he will be heading onto the stage for the final where he will join the presenting team live from Liverpool.

Ahead of the final this Saturday, Graham has given his verdict on some of the finalists - including what chance the UK act Mae Muller has of managing to take home the top prize after Sam Ryder's success as runner-up last year.

Speaking on This Morning today, Graham said of how the contest has changed in the past few years: "The whole tone of the competition has changed in the 14 years I've been doing it. I think people really want to impress.

"I mean there are some duds on Saturday night but there are a load of big great pop songs and it's quite the thing."

Asked what he thought of Mae's performance, he said: "I think she's great, but 26 is a weird place," referencing how the UK is performing last in the competition, having been given the 26th slot out of 26.

Talking about her song, Mae revealed the main theme of her track - 'I Wrote A Song' - is that it's "empowering".

"All my music kind of derives from my personal experiences but I just wanted to write something empowering, that would get everyone up off their seats. I think when we go through negative things like a breakup, or any kind of heartache, it's really easy to focus on the negatives and get lost in that but I wanted to focus on the empowerment of that and how we can navigate those emotions to come out the other side, feeling confident," she shared ahead of the competition.

Mae admitted this year feels particularly "special" for her.

She said: "I have had a listen and it’s been great really getting into the songs from this year, after getting to know the other contestants. They're all such talented people and so lovely and it feels like a special year.

"The level of talent is crazy and I'm looking forward to seeing them all smash it on the 13th May."
