Eurostar eyes direct UK to Switzerland train service by 2030s

  • Eurostar, SBB, and SNCF Voyageurs have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore establishing a potential direct rail connection between the UK and Switzerland.
  • The proposed service would offer direct journeys from London to Swiss cities, with travel times estimated at around six hours to Zurich and slightly less to Geneva, passing through France.
  • This initiative aims to meet strong customer demand for a direct rail link, as London is a primary flight destination from Switzerland, and would replace the current journey requiring a change in Paris.
  • The project is anticipated to be feasible at the earliest sometime in the 2030s, pending confirmation of entry formalities, necessary infrastructure changes, and intergovernmental agreements.
  • Separately, a new direct rail service between Prague and Copenhagen launched on 1 May, reconnecting the two capitals after more than a decade, operated by Czech Railways.
