After a three-year wait, Euphoria fans finally got to see the second season earlier this year after the show originally premiered in 2019.
Led by Zendaya, the cast explored new mature themes and content, with the series introduced to a new wave of fans following years of speculation and hype.
Naturally, HBO wasted no time in greenlighting the third season, with Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, releasing a statement back in February 2022.
She said: “Sam [Levinson], Zendaya, and the entire cast and crew of Euphoria have taken season 2 to extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart.
“We couldn’t be more honoured to work with this gifted, wildly talented team or more excited to continue our journey with them into season 3.”
It isn’t all good news though, as fans were shocked by reports that Barbie Ferreira will not be returning when the new season airs.
Who is in the cast of Euphoria season 3?
The main cast is yet to be confirmed, but it looks certain that Zendaya will return when production on season 3 kicks off.
It looks as though she will be taking her contribution to the show further, as she plans to sit on the directors chair when cameras start rolling again.
Speaking to Vogue Italia, she explained: “It’s funny. I was actually supposed to direct episode 6 [of season 2], but then I had to act in it.
“I didn’t have enough time, so unfortunately, I wasn’t able to this time around. I wanted to have enough time to do it the right way. So, next season probably.”
If she does direct an episode in the third season, it will be her directorial debut.
Most of the cast is expected to return as well, including Hunter Schafer as Jules, Jacob Elordi as Nate, Alexa Demie as Maddy, Algee Smith as Chris, Sydney Sweeney as Cassie, Maude Apatow as Lexi and Dominic Fike as Elliot.
However, Barbie Ferreira will not be back as Kat Hernandez as she confirmed she was leaving the hit drama on her Instagram.
She wrote: “After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I’m having to say a very teary eyed goodbye.
“I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today.
“I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it.
“I love you Katherine Hernandez.”
What is the release date of Euphoria season 3?
Euphoria airs on HBO in the USA and on Now and Sky Atlantic in the UK, with the release dates likely coinciding across networks.
However, HBO has not confirmed a release date for the new season, but for those hoping for a faster turnaround after the three-year gap, it might not be good news.
There is speculation that the next season won’t premiere until 2024 as Zendaya, along with other members of the cast, have busy schedules ahead.
Currently, Zendaya is filming Dune: Part Two, which has a massive, sweeping production across Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan and Italy.
When asked about a 2024 premiere in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zendaya said: “I think that might be true. I honestly don’t know.
“There [are] some executives that know better than me, you might wanna ask them. I’m gonna be busy for a while.”
Even though there could be another long wait for the next season, it remains unlikely it will be as long as the gap between seasons 1 and 2.
