ESPN deems Darius Slayton’s roster spot ‘uncertain’

With the New York Giants currently in rebuild mode, the new regime of General Manager Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will certainly look at several players to see how they fit with Big Blue’s plans going forward.

One of the names that has been swirling in trade rumors since the beginning of the offseason has been wide receiver Darius Slayton. Slayton, of course, had an impressive first two years in the NFL including eight touchdowns in his rookie season and now somehow finds himself as potentially the fourth or fifth wide receiver on the depth chart.

If Slayton does secure a spot on the roster, it will be a prove it year for him, like many others on the roster.

As it currently stands, it’s hard to imagine how Slayton fits in the Giants plans for this season given the crowded receiving corps consisting of Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, Kadarius Toney and Wan’Dale Robinson.

In fact, ESPN identified Slayton as a potential training camp cut casualty for Big Blue:

Slayton is entering the final season of his rookie deal, and there were at least some discussions about moving him last year and this offseason. With a new regime, his spot appears uncertain, especially after spending the spring working plenty with the second team, even with the top three wide receivers injured. It didn’t help that Slayton dropped some wide-open passes deep downfield during OTAs and minicamp. If the Giants’ wide receiving corps is healthy, they do have numbers. — Jordan Raanan

Certainly, it has to be somewhat concerning for Slayton given the fact that the Giants spent a first-round pick on Kadarius Toney in the 2021 draft and then a second-round pick on Wan’Dale Robinson in this year’s draft.

With Slayton’s roster spot all but secure, he will need to earn it during training camp and the preseason. With the plethora of weapons, the Giants have at the position, it is possible that Slayton finds his way off the roster prior to the season starting.
