Danny Murphy believes Erik ten Hag should give the Manchester United captaincy to a new signing - but only when the time is right.

It has been claimed new United manager Ten Hag will give the armband to goalkeeper David de Gea after a dressing room vote. Most of the squad have reportedly identified the Spaniard, 31, as the 'overwhelming candidate' for the job due to the respect he commands from his teammates.

Current skipper Harry Maguire is in danger of losing the armband after a poor season which left his quality and leadership firmly in the spotlight. The Englishman, 29, was often criticised by journalists and fans for his individual displays, steering the team to a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Premier League.
