Erik ten Hag has last laugh after Bruno Fernandes openly admitted Man Utd disappointment

Erik ten Hag left no stone unturned in his bid to improve Manchester United in the summer, but one transfer decision, in particular, left Bruno Fernandes disappointed.

Ten Hag was eager to bolster the club's midfield options, with a new No.6 high on the Dutchman's agenda. United eventually snapped up Casemiro from Real Madrid after failing to land Barcelona playmaker Frenkie de Jong - but Fernandes had another player in mind.

The Portuguese ace was keen to see his compatriot Matheus Nunes join him at Old Trafford; but the 23-year-old was instead snapped up by United's Premier League rivals, Wolves.

Speaking shortly after Nunes' switch had been confirmed, Fernandes told Portuguese media outlet Record: “I've already talked to him. I've already told him that he should have come here [to United] and not there. I'm very happy for him.

“He's going to experience the best league in the world, he's going to have players beside him with a lot of quality, like Rúben [Sa] and Joao [Moutinho], who will teach him a lot. They are two experienced players.

“Matheus is doing incredible things. He has an incredible scope for growth, he is a humble, hardworking kid and I'm sure he will probably explode in the Premier League and will show his qualities. Because for his qualities Matheus was not made for the Premier League, but rather the Premier League was made for Matheus."

While it's unclear whether or not Nunes was ever a target, United's decision to pass on the midfield maestro appears to have been a shrewd one.

Nunes has struggled to make much of an early impression at Molineux, who are currently without a manager and languishing just above the Premier League relegation zone following a lacklustre start to the season.

Wolves ' poor early season form saw Bruno Lage dismissed earlier this month - meaning Nunes could potentially be forced to impress the club's new boss in order to retain his first-team spot once an appointment is made.

Although Nunes has made an indifferent start to life in the top-flight, Casemiro, the midfield enforcer that Manchester United did decide to sign, has also failed to make much of an impression since arriving in the Premier League.

The Brazilian enforcer has been eased into life on these shores by Ten Hag, who had kept the former Real Madrid man on the bench in the wake of Scott McTominay's impressive form.

But Casemiro did catch the eye when he was handed his first Premier League start against Everton earlier this month and is expected to feature more prominently for Manchester United over the coming weeks.
