The First Test at Lord’s continues to rattle along at pace, with six more wickets – three for each side – falling on the second morning.
A remarkable first day saw 17 wickets tumble, with New Zealand bowled out for just 132, then England throwing away a position of real promise, going from 59 without loss to 116 for seven at stumps.
They added 25 more runs on the second morning, eking out a lead of nine, but were left to rue an opportunity missed.
England responded well with the ball, though, removing New Zealand’s top three before lunch. The Black Caps reached lunch 29 in front, with a game to save.
Stuart Broad was the first wicket to fall on day two, trying to launch a second slog off Tim Southee. England were still behind when Ben Foakes guided Southee to slip, but the last pair, Lancastrians Jimmy Anderson and Matt Parkinson, pushed them into the lead.
Parkinson, brought into the game as a concussion replacement for Jack Leach, was eventually bowled by Trent Boult, and England were all out for 141.
It took Anderson just seven balls to strike, with Will Young edging behind for one, the same score he made on the opening day.
Kane Williamson joined Tom Latham at the crease, and they nudged New Zealand back in front, but fell in quick succession to Matt Potts, who is making quite an impression on Test debut.
Williamson pushed hard outside off stump and was taken at third slip by Jonny Bairstow, before Latham got a thin edge through to the keeper. His review would not save him.
It was left to Devon Conway, with a phalanx of all-rounders, to build a match-winning lead.
