Energy suppliers are being urged to stop the 'outrageous' practice of force fitting prepayment meters in UK homes.
Grant Shapps has urged companies to suspend fitting the meters following reports that British Gas had been sending debt collectors to "break into" customers' homes.
The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Secretary issued the plea on Thursday evening, shortly after a meeting between his department and the chief executive of Centrica, which owns British Gas, had taken place.
