The government's energy plan will cost £60 billion over six months funded by borrowing, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng has announced.
Outlining his mini-budget, in which he also announced a cap on bankers' bonuses would be abolished, the Tory finance chief said a "sizable intervention" was appropriate, as it was in the Covid pandemic.
But he was immediately criticised for passing the cost of the massive intervention over to the British public rather than hitting energy companies with a windfall tax on their huge profits.
