Emmerdale star was ready to quit TV and acting after tragic death of husband

Emmerdale actress Susan Cookson said she had thought about changing her career to become a nurse following the heartbreaking death of her husband.

Susan was married to The Inbetweeners star Malcolm Scates before his death caused by a brain tumour. She said it was this which inspired her to retrain to help others.

The Mirror reports that just as Susan was driving to meet a nursing manager for advice on how to retrain, she got a phone call "out of the blue" offering her a role in Emmerdale to play nurse Wendy Posner.
