Emma Hayes explains why PSG drubbing was her "favourite" Chelsea performance of season

Emma Hayes declared Chelsea produced the performance of their season so far in a comfortable 3-0 UEFA Women's Champions League win over PSG.

The French side were blown away at Stamford Bridge as the Blues produced a European masterclass, with forward Lauren James starring with two goals - her maiden strikes in the competition. Sam Kerr's effort before half-time set Hayes' team on their way to three points that ensured they finished top of Group A and remain unbeaten in Europe this season.

Qualification for Chelsea and PSG through to the quarter-finals was already assured but they were still fighting for top spot, which guarantees being seeded for the quarter-final draw and playing the second leg at home.

The performance against a top European side left Hayes purring, as Chelsea signed off a memorable 2022 in fine style. "It felt like just another training day for us," she told the club website.

"In terms of the work we have done on the training pitch, I saw all of it reflected in the performance. The attitude and behaviour of the team has been outstanding this week, every single player had a superb game.

"We defended well, we were patient. Our movement was good and we were fluid. The team carried out everything we asked of them. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. It is my favourite performance of the season."

The win means Chelsea are in unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions and look set to challenge for honours domestically and on the continent in the second half of the season. Considering the Blues were drawn in the same group as European heavyweights Real Madrid and PSG, qualification looked a tough ask at the start of the season.

But they have swept aside all competition in Group A, with the PSG win arguably their most impressive display in the competition so far. The French side did occasionally threaten through forward Kadidiatou Diani, but she was superbly marshalled by Kadeisha Buchanan.

And Hayes was quick to praise the Canadian centre-back, who looked impenetrable in defence next to the in-form Millie Bright. "It was one of the reasons we brought Kadeisha to the club," Hayes added.

"It was for games like today. When you play very athletic teams, defending one versus one is her absolute standout strength. It was a lot of fun to watch her battle (with Diani) and watch them play.

"We could make changes as well, both before and during the game. Everyone is up to the level, so I'm thrilled with the entire squad. The commitment levels remain high but most importantly, they are learning and understanding our way of playing."
