Sewer collapse emergency work to close Donald Street in Newcastle

Traffic is expected to be slow on Donald Street around Beaumont Street at Hamilton from Wednesday morning as Hunter Water close part of the arterial roadway for emergency sewer repair work from 7am.

Donald Street will be closed to westbound traffic on the eastern side of Beaumont Street between Lawson Street, and reduced to one westbound land on the western side of the block to Swan Street, assuming weather conditions are favourable for work to go ahead.

Hunter Water says a section of sewer main has collapsed under the road and the essential repair involves deep excavation.

"We will be excavating a pit about 25 metres long by five metres wide and six metres deep to reveal the 15 metres of sewer main we need to remove and replace. We will reline other sewer mains in the vicinity," a spokesperson said in a statement late Tuesday, November 12.

"The construction work will be noisy, so, wherever possible, we will schedule the noisiest activities during the day."

Light traffic will be diverted via Lawson and Cleary streets, and Beaumont and Samdon streets, as crews work around the clock for the next 10 days.
