Embarrassed Kate Middleton says her cute mum gesture for George was a disaster

The Duchess of Cambridge has admitted that one sweet gesture for George ended up backfiring.

Kate is well known for being a doting and loving mum, and she also has a well publicised creative side - including taking gorgeous photos of her royal family.

As well as photography, she is also a talented drawer and showed off her artwork in the order of service created for her sister Pippa's wedding.

But according to our sister title The Mirror, there's one creative hobby that Kate revealed she picked up in order to create a very special present for her eldest son Prince George.

However, she was later forced to admit the present turned out to be a disaster as she was "really bad" at the skill.

Kate first revealed she was trying her hand at knitting way back in 2013 when she was pregnant with George.

According to Hello!, she told a group of royal fans while visiting Glasgow: "I've been trying to knit and I'm really bad. I should be asking for tips!"

In 2020, during a trip to Bradford, Kate visited Older Yet Wiser - an organisation that supports grandparents - and met with some grandmothers who were showing off their crocheting skills.

And there she confessed that her attempts to knit George a jumper had completely failed.

She told the group: "I tried knitting when I first had George. I tried to knit him a very special jumper, but I got halfway down and it splattered. It's such an amazing skill."

However, maybe Kate took her own advice and persevered with learning how to knit after telling children to face their fears last week? Her advice came during her appearance on CBeebies Bedtime Stories last Sunday.

Kate, dressed in jeans and a £179 Fair Isle Jumper, read children’s classic The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark.

The book, by Jill Tomlinson, tells the story of baby barn owl Plop, who is helped by others to grow in confidence and overcome his fears.

The Duchess chose the book to mark Children’s Mental Health Week.

The mother of three looked snug as she sat in a wooded area with a hot chocolate within reach, two soft toy owls for company and a lit fire bowl.

At the end of the reading, she added: “Wow, what an encouraging tale.

“We can all feel scared sometimes just like our little owl friend Plop, but as Mrs Barn Own said, ‘It’s better to find out about the things that scare us before we make up our mind’.

“And with the help of others, we can often face things that worry us. Now it’s time for bed. Night night and sleep tight.”
