An electrician has been left paralysed from the waist down after plunging 50ft from a pylon in a horror accident. Gavin Pugh was rushed to hospital in Birmingham where he spent six months undergoing life-saving treatment.
The 34-year-old was in a coma for two months and suffered a "T8 spinal complete injury" in the accident in Tamworth, Birmingham Live reports. Following his rehabilitation, he has returned to Bangor, North Wales, to live with his parents.
Due to his paralysis, specialist equipment will need to fitted in the home to allow Gavin to move around. His friend David Jones is taking part in a huge fundraising effort to help cover the costs.
The 32-year-old aims to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge - the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales - within 24 hours over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
"Gav is back living with his parents in Wales, but unfortunately they don't have the set-up at home to allow him to live independently. So I've challenged myself to raise money to fund the work and equipment needed for him," David said.
"I'm looking to raise as much money as possible by completing the three national peaks challenge with a twist - not only will it be winter, it will also run through Christmas Eve into Christmas Day! Anyone is welcome to join me on either mountain, whether it be wind, rain, snow or sunshine - it's getting done."
Over £1,800 has already been raised from an online appeal. If you would like to donate to the fund for Gavin, please click here for the fundraising page.
