Elderly Supreme Court Justice Rejects Calls to Resign Ahead of Trump Inauguration: 'She's In Great Health'

The eldest of the Supreme Court's liberal judges has no plans to resign, despite calls for her to step aside and allow Democrats to make an appointment ahead of Trump's inauguration.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, 70, has firmly rejected calls for her resignation amid rising pressure from anxious Democrats eager for President Joe Biden to appoint a younger replacement before Donald Trump returns to office, BBC reported.

Although some liberals have suggested she step down as a precaution, sources close to Sotomayor maintain she has no plans to leave the Supreme Court.

"This is no time to lose her important voice on the court," a source told the Wall Street Journal, adding that Sotomayor "takes better care of herself than anyone I know."

"She's in great health, and the court needs her now more than ever," another inside told CNN.

The calls for Sotomayor's resignation have stirred memories of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's passing in 2020, which allowed Trump to appoint a conservative successor, shifting the court to a 6-3 conservative majority. Trump's election has intensified these concerns, as he could reshape the court further if conservative Justices Clarence Thomas or Samuel Alito step down.

While Democrats have voiced concerns, no elected officials have called for Sotomayor's resignation.
