Elderly couple refused boarding on Jet2 flight to Greece after simple passport mistake

  • Celia Jenkins, 78, and her husband Rees, 82, lost around £500 after being refused boarding on a Jet2 flight from Bristol Airport to Greece due to post-Brexit rules regarding passport issue dates.
  • The couple 's passports were 10 years and three days old, violating Schengen area entry regulations which require UK passports to be issued less than 10 years before the arrival date.
  • Ms Jenkins described feeling like criminals after being escorted through airport border security, claiming that airlines and the government should make the 10-year rule much clearer to passengers.
  • Post-Brexit travel rules dictate that UK passport holders entering EU Schengen countries must possess documents issued within the last 10 years, with at least three months of validity remaining after their intended departure.
  • Jet2 responded by stating that while they regularly issue pre-departure reminders regarding passport validity guidelines, airlines are unable to physically examine and verify travel documents until passengers reach the airport.
