Elderly couple may hold key to Southwark Tube station murder

Police believe these two people may have witnessed the attack - (British Transport Police)

An elderly couple could be key witnesses in a murder investigation.

A 28-year-old man died in hospital two days after being assaulted in a horror attack at Southwark Underground station in August.

Detectives have spent months trying to trace an older man and woman who they believe may have “critical” information about what happened, but have not been successful.

On Friday, British Transport Police issued a CCTV image of the pair in hope members of the public could help find them.

Investigating officer, T/Detective Sergeant Tony Gittins said: “We are releasing these images of two people thought to be witnesses in a murder investigation.

“I would like to stress these people are not suspected of any criminal activity, but they may have important information that will help our investigation.

“If this is you, or you know anyone pictured, please text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 772 of 22 August."

Police and paramedics were called to Southwark Underground station around 9.30pm on Thursday, August 22 after reports of an attack on the stairs.

The victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but died two days later with his family by his side.

Rakeem Miles, 23, of East Street in Southwark was initially charged with GBH with intent. Following the victim’s death, he was charged with murder.
