Federal health investigators are tracking a multistate Salmonella outbreak in which every confirmed patient is a child under 10 years old, and three of them have been hospitalized. The source, according to the epidemiologic data collected so far, is pet turtles.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted the investigation notice on August 5. Eight children across six states have been confirmed infected with the same strain, Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+), with illness onset dates running from early June through early July. No deaths have been reported. Case data are current through July 27.
