Egypt issue Mohamed Salah injury update ahead of Liverpool return next month

Mohamed Salah is still nursing the injury he sustained against Chelsea in the FA Cup final and was unfit for the Champions League final against Real Madrid, according to Egypt's national team doctor.

Salah limped off during the first half of last month's FA Cup final triumph over Chelsea with an injury to his adductor and subsequently faced a race against time to be fit for the Champions League final in Paris. The Egyptian featured in 51 of the Reds' 63 games in all competitions as Jurgen Klopp's side featured in every fixture on offer during their astonishing pursuit of a quadruple.

In the current Liverpool squad, only Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk accumulated more minutes than Salah's 4,008. A feat made even more remarkable by the fact Salah missed six games over January and February as he led Egypt to the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Mohamed Abou El Ela, the Egyptian team doctor, has revealed the forward was still nursing the injury he picked up in early May when he joined up with his international teammates at the start of this month for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Speaking to On Time Sports , he said: "Salah's injury occurred during the FA Cup final in the adductor muscles, then he played against Wolves and in the Champions League final, and all of this in just 14 days.

"We read a statistic that he's the second-highest player in terms of minutes played this season.

"We send and receive players with medical reports, and Liverpool's said that he had pain and should get an x-ray, there's not a 100% fit player, but there's the question of whether he can push himself and play without risk.

"The club thought one game is enough and we chose the Guinea game because the second against Ethiopia would be hard for him to travel in a long flight. He couldn't play another game after three days."

Salah missed Liverpool's penultimate league fixture of the season as he turned his attention to getting fit for the Champions League final against the La Liga winners.

However, with Klopp's men, momentarily, needing one goal against Wolves on the final day of the season to send them to the top of the Premier League - as Manchester City surprisingly trialled to Aston Villa - the 30-year-old was introduced from the bench for the final 32 minutes.

Despite not looking in his usual peak condition, Salah fired the Reds into the lead, though their efforts ended up amounting to nothing as Pep Guardiola's men staged a remarkable late comeback against Villa.

After playing the full 90 minutes against Madrid in Paris six days later, Salah then jetted off to his homeland to play part in the AFCON qualifier against Guinea on June 5, before being later released from the squad.

Salah will join up with the rest of his Liverpool teammates at Kirkby for the start of pre-season on July 4, before jetting off to Southeast Asia later that month for the club's first pre-season tour since 2019.
