Edu suffers transfer setback as £20m bid 'rejected' amid Lucas Paqueta failed Arsenal hijack

Arsenal are facing a race against time to secure a new midfield signing with Mikel Arteta facing a midfield injury crisis against Aston Villa.

The Gunners have got off to a perfect start in the Premier League after winning their opening four fixtures, currently sitting top of the table. Arteta has played down talks of a potential title challenge, but the Spaniard is still keen to add one or two more signings to his squad before the summer transfer deadline on Thursday.

Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are both set to miss the clash against Villa through injury, leaving Arteta's midfield options a bit light heading into a busy period of the fixture list with the start of the Europa League group stage next week. The Gunners have been linked with a host of midfielders throughout the summer and have seemingly suffered a setback in their pursuit of Brazilian talent Danilo.

Arsenal have submitted a proposal of £20million to Palmeiras for the purchase of Danilo, according to GOAL Brasil. The offer was delivered to the Brazilian outfit earlier this week as the Gunners search for midfield reinforcements with just two days left in the summer transfer window.

Palmeiras' President Leila Pereira is set to reject the proposaly President Leila Pereira after having already said that she did not intend to release the player in the current market for the ball, only accepting a fee that matches Danilo's release clause of £76million. The Gunners are willing to invest in signing a new midfielder following Mikel Arteta's demands, with the club having considered a deal for Danilo's Brazilian compatriot Lucas Paqueta, but Arsenal were unable to hijack his move to West Ham.

Technical director Edu has already shown he is aware of emerging talents from Brazil after securing a deal for Marquinhos from Sao Paulo earlier this summer. Arsenal hold a long-term interest in the talented midfielder but face competition from AC Milan for the 21-year-old that registered 10 goal contributions in 43 appearances in the 2021/22 season.

A deal is thought to be more achievable for the Gunners in January with Danilo playing a key role in Palmeiras' pursuit of a league title and third consecutive Copa Libertadores. Arsenal are keen to sign a new midfielder but may need to focus on other targets with reports suggesting Benfica star Julian Weigl is also being considered.
