Edinburgh village that appeared in Outlander named among 'prettiest' in Scotland to visit

A charming little village not too far from Edinburgh has been named as one of the "prettiest" in the country.

The hidden gem location of East Linton, which is just over 40 mins drive from the capital, is well worth discovering and was recently named by travel and photography blog Chasing the Long Road in its list of the "25 prettiest villages in Scotland you must visit".

The shortlist picked out the East Lothian spot on the shortlist which is designed to help people plan out the perfect holiday.

Originally known simply as "Linton", the village and former police burgh in East Lothian is located just between Haddington and Dunbar.

Rich in history, it is said to have been a village since at least the 16th century, thanks to its connection with the East Linton Bridge, which was constructed back then and crosses the River Tyne to allow easier access to and from Edinburgh.

Due to the close proximity of the river, the village was at one time home to many watermills along its bank.

One of the most famous which is still standing, even featured in the hit show Outlander, the picturesque Preston Mill, which is a Category A listed building, dates back to the 18th century, and is open to the public for tours.

Other highlights of East Linton include Phantassie Doocot — a 16th century beehive-shaped dovecot — and the scenic Smeaton Lake. Prestonkirk Parish Church, which is only remaining active church in the village, is also worth checking out for its fascinating graveyard that includes cast iron headstones.

If you're looking for a day trip spot that is inexpensive and easy to access, East Linton may be exactly what you're after.

You can't visit East Lothian without checking out Preston Mill, which as well as offering fascinating historical tours is just a great place to sit and enjoy some peace and quiet.

The village was even recently picked out as one of the Best Places to Live in Scotland in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.
