Edinburgh's worst and best areas for life expectancy revealed in new league table

Edinburgh's worst areas for life expectancy have been revealed in a new league table that shows some huge differences between different areas across the capital.

Life expectancy in Scotland has fallen for the second year in a row and remains the lowest in the UK and western Europe. Shock figures from National Records of Scotland (NRS) show the national average fell by about three months for men to 76.6 years and two months for women to 80.8 years.

After the NRS released its annual update on Thursday Edinburgh Live examined the new data by Holyrood constituency which showed some grim results with people living in the capitals poorest areas living ten years less than those from the richest.

Compared to the rest of the country, the life expectancy rates in Edinburgh are close to the national average and some areas are among the highest in the country. Overall the life expectancy for men is lower than women across the city.

However males born in the Edinburgh Eastern constituency are expected to live to just 75.6 shortly followed by males in the Northern and Leith constituency.

Edinburgh Eastern includes areas such as Craigentinny, Duddingston and Northfield. Edinburgh Northern and Leith includes Pilton, Granton and Trinity.

There is an eight year difference between the lowest life expectancy in the city which is males from the East of the capital and the highest being women born in the Western constituency.

The five worse life expectancies in the city are males from the Edinburgh Eastern, then Edinburgh Northern and Leith, followed by Edinburgh Pentlands then Edinburgh Southern.

The highest life expectancy in the capital is for females born in the Western Edinburgh constituency, followed by Central, Southern and the Pentlands with women from the Northern and Leith and Eastern constituency having the lowest at around 80 years old.

Edinburgh Western covers Queensferry, Gogar and Ingliston while Edinburgh Central Haymarket, Stockbridge, Murrayfield and Craigleith.

Julie Ramsay, Head of Vital Events Statistics at NRS, said: "Life expectancy has decreased by more than 11 weeks for males and almost 8 weeks for females since 2018-2020."

The report states that between the early 1980s and early 2010s, life expectancy was increasing inScotland. In 2012-2014 the trend changed and life expectancy stopped increasing and began to plateau. In both 2018-2020 and 2019-2021, life expectancy has fallen.

Although Covid-19 played a major part in the recent downturn, the report also blames drug related deaths and deaths from dementia and Alzheimer's.
