Edinburgh’s top Chinese restaurant on TripAdvisor has a fascinating story to tell

When it comes to one of our favourite cuisines, we're certainly spoilt for choice.

If you get that craving for Chinese in the capital, you're left with plenty of options. Whether you prefer the family-run neighbourhood takeaway or something more high-end in the city centre, Edinburgh covers all bases when it comes to Chinese food.

Of course, we all have our favourites. But according to TripAdvisor, there's one restaurant in particular that stands out - and it has a fascinating story to tell.

Despite its lofty review rating, some people will not yet have discovered Macau Kitchen, sandwiched in-between The Meadows and Holyrood Park, on St Leonard's Street.

Finding itself as the 15th best restaurant in Edinburgh on TripAdvisor, of the 143 people to leave feedback, the Newington food spot has received 127 'excellent' 5 star reviews.

But what really makes Macau Kitchen stand out is unique offering. Taking inspiration from the former Portuguese colony of Macau, which borders Hong Kong in south east Asia, the BYOB eatery's menu includes the likes Bacalhau Dourado, Portugal's national dish - dry-salted cod, Costela Tamarindo - sweet and sour pork ribs, with their own Asian twists - and even the iconic Portuguese pastel de nata custard tarts for dessert.

Macau Kitchen serves up a beautiful fusion of Asian and Portuguese food, still found on the streets of Macau today, while also taking in the exotic influences of Goa and Melaka.

Explaining how the restaurant and their one-of-a-kind Edinburgh offering came to be, the owners say: 'Our cooking style is Cozinha Luso (Portuguese) Asiatica (Asian style)

'Luso-Asian refers to our culinary heritage which originates from the Portuguese settlements and inter-marriage in Goa, Melaka and Macau.

'All of these regions are blessed with a tropical climate and with incredible diversity of spices, cooking techniques and produce.

'This diversity forms the basis of the flavours our chef grew up with'.

And if you're not licking your lips at the prospect of a Macau Kitchen meal just yet, perhaps we can let some of the reviews do the talking.

One TripAdvisor comment said: "What a fantastic place. Very cosy, so great atmosphere. We asked the waitress to choose for us and we were not disappointed.

Another customer said it was 'the best meal they'd had in ages' and commented: "Went there for dinner after a theatre show and it was amazing.

"Staff were so friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. Would go again in a heartbeat."

One recent review also described the 'tiny' restaurant as a 'hidden gem' and said: "What a find this place is! Intimate and authentic with extremely welcoming staff.

It's been called a 'foodie's paradise' (Instagram @macaukitchen_uk)

"The chef even came out and explained how the special dish we ordered should be eaten.

"We cannot wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!"

And one review seems to have summed up the general love for Macau Kitchen, with the diner calling it a 'foodie paradise' and hailing it as 'the best restaurant we visited in Edinburgh', adding 'we will be back'.
