Edinburgh's 100-strong penguin crew 'doing well' after yearly health check-up

A colony of penguins at Edinburgh Zoo have received their yearly vaccinations and check-ups as part of their annual medical.

The 100-strong crew of gentoo penguins were found to be "doing well", according bosses at the capital attraction.

Footage from the wildlife conservation centre shows the Antarctic birds receiving their jags and check-ups under the watchful eyes of their keepers.

A sweet video shows the colony following zoo staff out of their enclosure before being picked up by medics to be checked over.

Edinburgh Live reports the well-behaved birds all kept calm as they were handled by vets ensuring they remain in good health.

All were then released back into their fenced off area to frolic in the pool in the capital sunshine.

According to experts, penguin species, including the gentoo, face many threats in the wild as a result of global warming, overfishing, marine pollution and habitat loss.

The zoo forms part of ’Project Pinnamin,’ a conservation project helping their northern rockhopper cousins in their native habitat.

An Edinburgh Zoo spokesperson said: “Over 100 penguins at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo had their annual health check earlier this month.

“Once a year, keepers and vets at the wildlife conservation charity give the full colony vaccinations and health checks.

“This year’s catch up revealed all of the charity’s penguins are doing well.”

Last year, the penguins welcomed nine new chicks to their Edinburgh colony.
