In a separate incident, taking place on Thursday morning, May 19, the South Queensferry Coastguard were once again called into action to assist Kinghorn Coastguard after a motor cruiser lost power near Pettycur Beach.
The call came in at 8:15 and after the crew had ensured the safety of the two individuals onboard, they retuned later in the afternoon to tow the vessel to the shore.
An update from the Kinghorn RNLI team read: "Our volunteers and our partners at Kinghorn Coastguard and South Queensferry Coastguard had an early wake up call at 8:15 on Wednesday 19th May, to a motor cruiser that had run aground on Pettycur Beach, near Kinghorn, after losing power. The vessel was high and dry with an outgoing tide, so assistance was given to the 2 persons on board which included securing the boat with anchors ready for the next tide to float her off.
"A plan was made to return at 2pm to assist with floating the cruiser off the beach and towing her to a safe place. The Lifeboat returned to station, was washed down and refuelled, and the crew left at 11:30 to get breakfasts/lunches.
"At 12:25 our crew were called back out along with Kinghorn Coastguard and South Queensferry Coastguard as the cruiser had started taking on water with the incoming tide, through unseen damage in the hull. A salvage pump was taken to pump water out so that she could remain afloat while being towed to safety, but the crew were unable to save the vessel and she sank on the beach at Pettycur. The two people on the boat were taken ashore to make arrangements for her salvage.
"Our team recovered the Lifeboat, washed down and refuelled, and were finished by 4pm. Special thanks to RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat who launched with a second salvage pump only to be turned back when it became apparent that it was too late to pump the vessel out."
