Edinburgh residents speak of their nightmare living on road 'they can't pass'

Edinburgh residents living on a busy road have spoken of their nightmare after flooding left the area 'almost impassable'.

Locals on Barnton Grove say their street has been flooded since Boxing Day, as well as ongoing issues for the past few years meaning they often have to make a detour to avoid getting soaked.

Scottish Water put the issues down to blocked drains and said they would investigate the situation.

63-year-old, Peter Downie spoke to Edinburgh Live about the flooding. Peter is a resident Barnton and lives just a few streets away from where the flooding is making an impact.

Peter, who has lived in the area since 1992, said: “We were going out for a walk, we went along Barnton Grove and we turned into it and we thought this is ridiculous. It’s almost impossible to pass.

“There is a fairly high density of housing and people will use Barnton Grove to come down to local shops, post office, Scotmid, hairdresser, local cafes so it is certainly inconvenient to take a detour.”

At the time of the flooding cars were able to make their way past but pedestrians on foot were forced to make a detour.

According to Peter the road “is fairly consistently flooded within recent memory, for the past two to three years” and went onto say “It is also a safety hazard.”

During the Christmas weekend, Edinburgh and many other surrounding areas were impacted by the weather.

Barnton Grove was not as lucky as some Edinburgh streets however some other residents in the area did voice their worries that this may happen in the future.

One person said: “It may have been caused by construction of the housing that used to be the Barnton Hotel or it may be the resurfacing of Whitehouse Road.”

Later on, a gully vehicle from Edinburgh City Council was sent out to clear Barnton Grove of the flooding that had made the street impassable for the past few days.

A spokesperson from Edinburgh City Council said that the situation had “been passed to Scottish Water for their attention.”

This was followed up by Scottish Water, a spokesperson for the water company said: “We believe there is blocked sewer at the junction with Barnton Grove.

"We have attended this issue but were unable to access the sewer safely due to the busy nature of the road. Our teams will work to clear the sewer as soon as possible, with further investigatory work to take place in the new year.”
