Edinburgh resident left 'distressed' by litter and fly tipping issue on quiet street

A Gorgie resident has complained about a persistent litter and fly tipping issue on their street and has called on Edinburgh City Council to act.

The local, who wishes to remain anonymous, has said that the problem has been ongoing for some time on Smithfield Street.

Pictures shared with Edinburgh Live showed a mattress lying against a wall and several pieces of litter strewn across the ground.

“I am living in Smithfield Street as there is a serious litter problem on our street,” they said.

“Despite having trash bins and designated stops, household waste is constantly scattered on the street and sidewalks. This situation causes great distress and discomfort for us residents.

“We have reported this issue to the council multiple times as council taxpayers, but no improvements have been made - it is becoming a critical matter.”

Local independent councillor Ross McKenzie has said that he reported the latest spate of fly tipping and litter to the council on Wednesday 21.

He added that he was disappointed to hear that the items remained in place after being assured that they would be removed.

Councillor McKenzie chased up the issue again after being contacted by Edinburgh Live and the issue is understood to have been rectified on Sunday 25.

"I reported this on Wednesday evening and was informed on Thursday afternoon that it had been dealt with, so I'm really disappointed to see the amount of litter remaining today.

“Reporting fly tipping and overflowing bins through the online portal usually gets a response within 24 hours, but reports of litter don't seem to get the same attention - even where the litter has been caused by fly tipping and overflowing bins!

“The workers in waste services do a great job. This is a problem with the system and it's up to councillors to work with senior officers to get it fixed.

“It's clear that the streets in Gorgie don't get the attention they need. I'm determined to change that.”

A council environmental health team removed the litter and fly tipped items on Sunday afternoon. The council has been approached for comment.
