Edinburgh pub to host one of Scotland’s ‘biggest’ drag competitions ever

A popular Cowgate venue is set to host one of Scotland’s ‘biggest’ drag competitions ever - looking for a performer who can bring it to the stage ‘like no other’.

Beginning in October, the competition titled The Majesty will see 10 drag queens battle it out on stage over eight weeks - with one performer going home every week. Held at The Three Sisters, the competition will conclude with a finale evening on November 25.

The brief for each week is set to be different every time, although there will always be a performance section - which will be the main criteria for the panel of four judges.

Posting to Instagram, The Majesty said: “The Majesty is on the hunt for a drag performer who can bring it to the stage like no other.

“Over the eight week run, the contestants will battle it out in hopes of taking home not only the crown, but our gag-worthy prizes. Each week, one contestant will leave the competition leaving us with three in the grand final.

“The last performer standing will be… The Majesty. The Majesty is mainly focused on performance.

“Each week will have its very own theme, and it’s up to the contestants to meet the brief in whatever way they see fit. With a live audience, three resident judges and a guest judge each week to impress, the pressure is on. Just remember…pressure makes diamonds.”

Excitement for the competition was clear on their Instagram page, though one user did ask: “The Scottish scene is overflowing with incredible drag talent and I'm wondering with good intent if this competition is exclusively for ‘queens’? If so it’s sad to exclude all other types of drag from it again.”

The Majesty cleared up any doubt over who could enter the competition with the response: “The Majesty is open to all types of drag. The use of the word ‘queens’ has maybe been taken too literally.

“Kings, Queens, everyone is welcome. We can’t wait for the Scottish scene to show off its incredible talents.

The winner crowned on November 25 will receive £1000 cash, a main stage slot at Pride Edinburgh 2023, their own four week run at Three Sisters as well as a crown and sash. Prizes for the weekly winners are also to be expected.

The competition begins on October 7 at 8pm, in the brand new ‘live’ room at The Three Sisters.
