Edinburgh police rush to early morning smash on city bypass as delays expected

An early morning three-vehicle smash on the Edinburgh city bypass is causing delays for commuters.

Shortly before 7am, an accident on the A720 at Baberton prompted the closure of one lane on the carriageway as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Alerting road users to possible delays, Traffic Scotland tweeted: "NEW: 06:48 #A720 Baberton Junction. The Eastbound carriageway is currently restricted due to a collision. Police and TRISS are en-route. Traffic is building up on approach."

Live traffic cameras show tailbacks starting to form on the busy bypass, although it is currently unknown how many vehicles are involved in the smash or if there are any injuries.

Issuing an update just after 7am, they said that delays of around 25 minutes should be expected. They added: "UPDATE: 07:01 #A720 Baberton Junction. The Eastbound carriageway is currently restricted due to a collision.

"Police and TRISS are en-route. Traffic is building up on approach. Current delay approx. 25 minutes."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.40am on Thursday, 1 December, 2022, officers were called to a report of a three vehicle crash on the A720 at the Baberton junction.

“The road was closed and has now reopened.

“Arrangements were made for the vehicles to be recovered.”
