Edinburgh man builds incredible Hobbit-themed shed from scratch in back garden

An Edinburgh man could see his garden shed crowned as the best in the country after creating every Hobbit fans dream.

Ali Hughson has been shortlisted to win 'Shed of the Year' 2022, with a public vote to decide who will be handed the prestigious title.

Building the unique structure from scratch, Ali was able to theme his unique creation around the work of British author J.R.R Tolkein, known for his novel The Hobbit.

Used as a space to store his artworks, the shed is an artwork in itself, and even features the iconic round green door and sloping roof from the story.

Although an impressive shed unlike any other, the competition is said to be fierce this year for the title, with Ali's hobbit house up against a boat house, fairy garden and miniature pub.

The prize for the Cuprinol’s Shed of the Year competition will be a whopping £1,000 for the winner, a plaque, and £100-worth of Cuprinol products.

Head judge and founder of the competition, Andrew Wilcox, was left impressed with the calibre of entrants this year. He said:

“We’ve seen some first-of-their-kind designs, making it nearly impossible to whittle down to just three from each category. One great thing that has come from successive lockdowns is how much it has inspired people’s creativity, and it’s great that this has been channelled into the design of their own little escapes.

“These past years, more than ever, have shown just how much a role our gardens and sheds can play in our lives and the different ways they can be used. It’s been great to see shed enthusiasts old and new come up with some truly fantastic ideas, which we hope will inspire the next generation of shed enthusiasts.”
