What to expect from Edinburgh snow and ice yellow weather warning
Forecasters at the Met Office have told the people of Edinburgh to remain wary of the following issues:
- There is a small chance that long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel could occur
- There is a slight chance that roads may become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers
- There is a small chance that communities could be cut off for several days
- There is a small chance that long interruptions to power supplies and other services, such as gas, water, telephone and mobile phone coverage, may occur
The new Met Office forecast for Thursday and Friday has noted that snow could develop widely across the area of Edinburgh as a potentially deep area of low pressure moves across the UK.
Parts of Scotland will see the heaviest snow on Friday, with five to 10cm of snow expected for many locations. Potentially, 15 to 20cm of snow is to accumulate across the northern portion of the areas affected.
Higher parts of the Central Belt of Scotland could see as much as 30 to 40cm of snow in places and in addition, there is potential for strong winds - which may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting of lying snow.
The matrix for impact on the UK on the Met Office website has indicated that there is a likely high impact of disruption due to the heavy snow, with drivers warned to remain wary on roads.
