Edinburgh firefighters tackle blaze as pile of tyres bursts into flames

Edinburgh firefighters responded to a blaze in the north of the city that involved a pile of burning rubber.

A single appliance was mobilised to Madelvic Square, near Granton Harbour, on Thursday after a call came in regarding a pile of tyres that had been set alight.

A video from the scene shows huge clouds of black smoke filling the area that can be seen from a great distance.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they extinguished the blaze and left having insured the area was made safe.

They said: "We were alerted at 8.57pm on Thursday, 18 August to reports of tyres on fire at Madelvic Square, Edinburgh.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to the scene to extinguish the fire and make the area safe."

The blaze originated from the area where an old abandoned building sits opposite plush new flats near the harbour. The building has several notices attached to the property that warns people to stay out.
