Edinburgh emergency services race to car engulfed in flames on city bypass

Emergency services in Edinburgh have raced to an incident on the A720 this afternoon between Baberton and Dreghorn.

The Scottish Fire Service received reports of a car alight on the hard shoulder shortly after 1.30pm on Thursday, May 11.

Police also attended the scene where a vehicle was engulfed in flames which caused thick smoke to billow into the air and caused delays on the busy motorway.

One male casualty was checked over at the scene but no further medical assistance was required. Two fire engines fought the blaze for over an hour and part of the road was closed.

There are reportedly still delays on the bypass but the road has fully reopened.

One eyewitness said that traffic was backed up all the way to Edinburgh Park and said: "Just passed. the car was completely burnt out. Hope no one was trapped instead."

Traffic Scotland posted an update at 14.53 which read: "The Eastbound carriageway lane 2 (of 2) is now OPEN after an earlier vehicle fire.

"Traffic is still very heavy in the area. Eastbound delays of approx. 25 minutes above normal."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received reports of a vehicle fire at 13.41 on Thursday, May 11.

"Two appliances attended the scene and Police Scotland was also in attendance."

They added: "One male was assessed at the scene but no further medical attention was required. Crews left at 14:57."

A Police Scotland Spokesperson said: "Around 1.45pm on Thursday, 11 May, officers were called to a car fire on the A720 at Baberton junction.

"Emergency services attended and the road was closed. Recovery has been arranged and both lanes we reopened by 2.30pm."
